Tavira is the eastern Algarve's most charming historic town — about 26,000 permanent residents, 2km from a string of Ria Formosa lagoon beaches reached by ferry, and the Algarve's most successful preservation of authentic Portuguese character. Average asking prices reached approximately €2,980 per square metre in early 2026, sitting between Faro and Lagos. The expat community is established but smaller and quieter than Lagos — proportionally more retirees who specifically didn't want resort-town intensity. Tavira works for expat buyers who want Algarve climate (3,000+ sunshine hours, mild winters) but reject the high-season chaos of central Albufeira or Lagos. The historic centre (Centro Histórico) is the eastern Algarve's best-preserved — Roman bridge, hilltop castle, 30+ churches, narrow tiled streets. Coastal sub-areas (Cabanas de Tavira, Santa Luzia, Pedras d'el Rei) face the Ria Formosa lagoon rather than the open Atlantic, which creates an unusual seascape: warm shallow beaches accessed by short ferry rides, octopus and seafood culture, traditional fishing villages 5-15 minutes from the historic centre.
