Póvoa de Varzim is an Atlantic beach-resort town on the Norte coast, about 30km north of Porto and immediately adjacent to Vila do Conde — the two towns effectively run together. The municipality has around 63,000 residents and a long identity as a seaside resort: a wide sandy seafront, a casino, a busy fishing harbour, and a summer-holiday tradition that goes back well over a century. Average asking prices reached approximately €2,650 per square metre in early 2026, a touch below neighbouring Vila do Conde and well below central Porto. Póvoa de Varzim works for expat buyers who want a proper beach town with a genuine resort feel — promenade, restaurants, seafront life — but at northern-coast prices and with Porto easily reachable. Like its neighbour, it is on the Porto metro (Linha B), so living here without depending entirely on a car is realistic. The town has a working-fishing-port authenticity alongside the holiday scene; it is lively in summer and noticeably quieter, and properly Atlantic-grey, in winter. The climate is the northern-coast pattern — mild but wet and cool in the colder months. The expat community is small and not concentrated; this is a Portuguese resort town that foreigners join, not an expat colony.
